Can I really lose my hair from stress?
Ever heard of the phrase, “your stressing me out so much my hair is falling out!” It turns out that there is some truth behind the madness; certain types of hair loss have been linked to stress.
There are three known types of hair loss that have been linked to stress:
- Alopecia areata: White blood cells attack the hair follicle which stops hair growth and causes existing hair to fall out brought on upon high levels of stress.
- Telogen effluvium: Triggered by both high levels of emotional or physical stress, excessive amounts of growing hairs are pushed into a resting phase which results in sudden hair loss when performing everyday tasks such as shampooing or combing the hair.
- Trichotillomania: A condition commonly caused from feelings of anxiety, tension, fatigue, frustration or stress which causes an overwhelming urge to pull out hair out from the scalp, eyebrows, or other areas on the body.
Relax, the good news is that managing your stress level and getting your anxiety under control can result in hair re growth. It’s important to talk to your doctor if you notice sudden hair loss because this could be your body’s first indication there is an underlying medical condition that may require treatment.
